This book assesses what the Vietnam war meant - on the battle field and in AustraliaWhen the first Australian troops landed on Vietnamese soil, the significance of the conflict was scarcely realised - but in time it was to affect not only tens of thousands of Australians who served in Vietnam, but an extraordinary cross-section of people at home. This thorough, fascinating account is the whole story of the Vietnam conflict abroad and in Australia. It contains an updated roll of honour of those who served in the Vietnam War.

"Intense and absorbing... If you buy only one book on the Vietnam War, this is the one you want." -Chicago Tribune Christian G. Appy's monumental oral history of the Vietnam War is the first work to probe the war's path through both the United States and Vietnam. These vivid testimonies of 135 men and women span the entire history of the Vietnam conflict, from its murky origins in the 1940s to the chaotic fall of Saigon in 1975. Sometimes detached and reflective, often raw and emotional, they allow us to see and feel what this war meant to people literally on all sides: Americans and Vietnamese, generals and grunts, policymakers and protesters, guerrillas and CIA operatives, pilots and doctors, artists and journalists, and a variety of ordinary citizens whose lives were swept up in a cataclysm that killed three million people. By turns harrowing, inspiring, and revelatory, Patriots is not a chronicle of facts and figures but a vivid human history of the war. "A gem of a book, as informative and compulsively readable as it is timely." -The Washington Post Book World

The Corps And Vietnam Remembered

Author : Frank James Costanza
ISBN : 0692195130

The Corps and Vietnam Remembered documents the memories of Marine Frank James Michael's Costanza's four years of service in the United States Marine Corps. The book discusses his decision to join the Marines, basic training, Navy schools, two tours in Vietnam, and his decision to muster out. The book closes with his difficult reentry into civilian life and somewhat tumultuous entry into the University of Maryland as an undergraduate Electrical Engineering student. It has some very graphic observations on war's effects on young servicemen. Frank started compiling this book from notes and observations he had written over the years after his youngest son, Anthony (Tony), questioned him on Father's Day 2008 about his time served in Vietnam. Since his dad didn't talk much of his time in Vietnam, Tony wondered if he had any disturbing stories about Vietnam. Half way through Frank's response, Tony stopped his father and said what he was relaying was very hard to listen to. The 2008 conversation served as the impetus for Frank to gather his notes and memories and put them to paper, which resulted in an unpublished book for his family, friends, and children to read as a glimpse into his formative young adult years. The unpublished book has stirred many interesting conversations over the years and has helped Frank deal with many issues that he kept hidden within for decades. The process of putting strings of internal thoughts and emotions to paper has been very cathartic. Several readers have encouraged him to publish it more formally. The book you have before you is a product of that encouragement.

Soldiers Saving Soldiers is the story of the 18th Surgical Hospital and the hundreds of doctors, nurses, medics and support personnel who were stationed at Pleiku, South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. In particular, it centers on the experiences of Dr. Jerry W. Martin, who stationed there from June 1966-June 1967.Part combat hospital and part medical clinic for Vietnamese and Montagnard villagers, the 18th Surgical Hospital served as a vital lifeline and saved the lives of thousands of American servicemen, enemy combatants and local families throughout the Vietnam War. Like their fellow countrymen who fought the war, the men and women of the 18th Surgical Hospital have been forever changed by their experiences in Vietnam, both good and bad.The book also presents the entire history of the unit, from its origins in 1928 through World War II, and then from reactivation in Vietnam through 1971. In addition, Dr. Martin presents the day-to-day life of a field surgeon with a look at dozens of surgical procedures and their outcomes (with detailed full-color case photographs, plus nearly 500 photographs of people and places throughout Vietnam.Soldiers Saving Soldiers is an excellent book for veterans, their families and military historians, and also presents excellent case studies for medical professionals and modern-day field surgeons.

No one can understand the complete tragedy of the American experience in Vietnam without reading this book. Nothing so underscores the ambivalence and confusion of the American commitment as does the composition of our fighting forces. The rich and the powerful may have supported the war initially, but they contributed little of themselves. That responsibility fell to the poor and the working class of America.--Senator George McGovern "Reminds us of the disturbing truth that some 80 percent of the 2.5 million enlisted men who served in Vietnam--out of 27 million men who reached draft age during the war--came from working-class and impoverished backgrounds. . . . Deals especially well with the apparent paradox that the working-class soldiers' families back home mainly opposed the antiwar movement, and for that matter so with few exceptions did the soldiers themselves.--New York Times Book Review "[Appy's] treatment of the subject makes it clear to his readers--almost as clear as it became for the soldiers in Vietnam--that class remains the tragic dividing wall between Americans.--Boston Globe
