How can the human mind represent the external world? What is thought, and can it be studied scientifically? Should we think of the mind as a kind of machine? Is the mind a computer? Can a computer think? Tim Crane sets out to answer these questions and more in a lively and straightforward way, presuming no prior knowledge of philosophy or related disciplines. Since its first publication, The Mechanical Mind has introduced thousands of people to some of the most important ideas in contemporary philosophy of mind. Crane explains the fundamental ideas that cut across philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence and cognitive science: what the mind–body problem is; what a computer is and how it works; what thoughts are and how computers and minds might have them. He examines different theories of the mind from dualist to eliminativist, and questions whether there can be thought without language and whether the mind is subject to the same causal laws as natural phenomena. The result is a fascinating exploration of the theories and arguments surrounding the notions of thought and representation. This third edition has been fully revised and updated, and includes a wholly new chapter on externalism about mental content and the extended and embodied mind. There is a stronger emphasis on the environmental and bodily context in which thought occurs. Many chapters have been reorganised to make the reader’s passage through the book easier. The book now contains a much more detailed guide to further reading, and the chronology and the glossary of technical terms have also been updated. The Mechanical Mind is accessible to anyone interested in the mechanisms of our minds, and essential reading for those studying philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, or cognitive psychology.

Roald Dahl meets The Penderwicks in this quirky, humorous, whimsical, and heartwarming middle grade debut about two siblings who run away from home to escape working in the family coffin business. John Coggin is no ordinary boy. He is devising an invention that nobody has ever seen before, something that just might change the world, or at least make life a little bit better for him and his litter sister, Page. But that’s only when he can sneak a break from his loathsome job—building coffins for the family business under the beady gaze of his cruel Great-Aunt Beauregard. When Great-Aunt Beauregard informs John that she’s going to make him a permanent partner in Coggin Family Coffins—and train Page to be an undertaker—John and Page hit the road. Before long, they’ve fallen in with a host of colorful characters, all of whom, like John and Page, are in search of a place they can call home. But home isn’t something you find so much as something you fight for, and John soon realizes that he and Page are in for the fight of their lives.

The idea of intelligent machines has become part of popular culture. But tracing thehistory of the actual science of machine intelligence reveals a rich network of cross-disciplinarycontributions--the unrecognized origins of ideas now central to artificial intelligence, artificiallife, cognitive science, and neuroscience. In The Mechanization of Mind in History, scientists, artists, historians, and philosophers discuss the multidisciplinary quest to formalize andunderstand the generation of intelligent behavior in natural and artificial systems as a whollymechanical process. The contributions illustrate the diverse and interacting notions that chart theevolution of the idea of the mechanical mind. They describe the mechanized mind as, among otherthings, an analogue system, an organized suite of chemical interactions, a self-organizingelectromechanical device, an automated general-purpose information processor, and an integratedcollection of symbol manipulating mechanisms. They investigate the views of pivotal figures thatrange from Descartes and Heidegger to Alan Turing and Charles Babbage, and they emphasize suchfrequently overlooked areas as British cybernetic and pre-cybernetic thinkers. The volume concludeswith the personal insights of five highly influential figures in the field: John Maynard Smith, JohnHolland, Oliver Selfridge, Horace Barlow, and Jack Cowan.Philip Husbands is Professor of ComputerScience and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Informatics at the University of Sussex andCodirector of the Sussex Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics. Westerners's view of themselves, both socially & psychologically, is largely determined by modern science, now being challenged by alternative views of man embodied in various religious & esoteric disciplines. Religious illumination, drug & paranormal experiences produce altered states of consciousness which are radically changing human psychology & psychotherapy. In the 1960's new values emerged in Western society to form a new social paradigm underlying social movements like the environmental lobby and the anti-technology upsurge. Alternatives to the rational linear Western mind are suggested by the findings of parapsychology.

This monograph examines the metaphysical commitments of the new mechanistic philosophy, a way of thinking that has returned to center stage. It challenges a variant of reductionism with regard to higher-level phenomena, which has crystallized as a default position among these so-called New Mechanists. Furthermore, it opposes those philosophers who reject the possibility of interlevel causation. Contemporary philosophers believe that the explanation of scientific phenomena requires the discovery of relevant mechanisms. As a result, new mechanists are, in the main, concerned solely with epistemological questions. But, the author argues, their most central claims rely on metaphysical assumptions. Thus, they must also take into account metaphysics, a system of thought concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world around it. This branch of philosophy does indeed matter to the empirical sciences. The chapters investigate the nature of mechanisms, their components, and the ways in which they can bring about different phenomena. In addition, the author develops a novel account of causation in terms of activities. The analysis provides the basis for many further research projects on mechanisms and their relations to, for example, the mind-body problem, realization, multiple realization, natural kinds, causation, laws of nature, counterfactuals, and scientific levels.
