This autobiographical story takes the reader into the mind of the author, who is a lawyer from a well-known family from Lynn, Massachusetts in the midst of trying a murder case in the early 1970's, and the trials, tribulations and frustration, which he experiences at the hands of an insensitive judge. The author makes visits to the courthouse cafeteria, while awaiting the verdict of a man whose life is in his hands, and by means of flashbacks is attempting to understand how he got to where he is today. His reveries focus upon the problems facing a young lawyer in the 1960's from Lynn's ethnic melting pot, affectionately known as the "Brickyard," where the family chicken house was located, and who struggles to enter private practice as a solo practitioner. The author's recollections are replete with humorous anecdotal stories involving earlier cases, lawyers, judges and Damon Runyan-type clients and characters from Lynn and surrounding communities.

People from all walks of life are increasingly interested in owning chickens. Some folks want them as a source of fresh eggs, either for themselves or the marketplace. Other individuals want to raise and butcher their own birds so that they know exactly what went into that meat. Some people enjoy poultry as companion animals, or love seeing these colorful birds out on the landscape. And some folks want chickens for their bug-hunting ability in the garden or pasture. Whatever the reason, small flock ownership is increasing, even in suburbia and particularly within urban centers. But how to house them? Many books already exist on various other aspects of poultry management: breeds, feeding, health, egg production, meat production, showing, and marketing. What about housing? Every chicken flock needs shelter of some kind. A number of books provide chicken coop plans for free or for a small fee. Yet there is a lot more to providing good housing, than merely picking out a house plan. Issues of predator control, vermin control, waste management, flock production, disease management, hygiene and sanitation - all these factors help determine whether a chicken coop will be a pleasant, healthy addition or a costly eyesore. The Chicken Coop Manual looks at all these topics and how they interact: Section I covers 18 different design criteria which flock owners and coop designers need to consider BEFORE choosing or building a coop. Section II looks at eight different chicken coop plans, using conventional stud construction, for flock sizes ranging from only a few birds, to a commercial-sized flock of 100 birds. Section III takes a look at 12 alternative housing and shelter options, and how they may be a flock owner's best bet for cost-effective, attractive, functional and practical flock ownership. Section IV provides a list of additional resources for flock owners - websites, books and getting-started articles which focus on, or address some aspect of, poultry housing. Flock owners who study and apply this manual will be able to: * familiarize themselves with issues which affect flock health, hygiene, safety, productivity and cost * determine whether a particular coop design will work for their particular circumstances * know how to meet any relevant building codes, covenants or regulatory requirements * maximize their birds' quality of life and their own enjoyment of that flock, for years to come. This book is also helpful for teachers, mentors, policy makers and/or regulators who need to become familiar with all the issues pertaining to flock housing and chicken coop design. Even experienced flock owners will find some helpful hints and new ideas within these chapters.

This chicken house is designed to be built with as few cuts as possible for quick and easy construction. Laurene has built two other chicken houses from reclaimed wood and materials. Each house turns out a little bit different. This house is designed for inexpensive materials to keep the cost low, and still have a structurally sound home for the birds that will keep them sheltered from the wind, cool in summer, and warm in winter. With so many jobs to do on the property, we needed an easier solution for keeping the chicken house clean also. After researching many styles, Laurene came up with this new design as an experiment that will improve the functionality of the chicken house as well as make it easier to keep clean for the birds. The less work it takes to care for them the more we are able to enjoy the benefits of keeping chickens in our yard.

The stories in I've Never Lived in a Chicken House are real. They contain many of the lessons I learned from my adventures and travels in Oklahoma, Alaska, Washington, Missouri, and Arkansas (A few names have been changed to avoid embarrassment). Mama was my greatest inspiration. Her life was a model of Christian living. She didn't carry religion on her shoulder nor did she push her beliefs on others. She just lived a life of love and compassion. Her life was a picture of how life should be lived. I was fortunate to live in a time when as a poor country boy, I was privileged to attend an elementary school that started each day with a reading from the Bible and prayer led by our teacher, Lila Standefer. The teachers were blessed with wisdom and the ability to create in us a will to do better. Mr. Brownie Howze was the greatest of all my teachers. He seemed to have a saying for almost everything such as "Your nose ends where the other fellow's begins" and "Smile when you say that." Coach Roy Gammons, my freshman basketball coach, inspired me to get a degree and become a teacher and basketball coach. My life would not have been the same without the joys I experienced while working with boys and girls during my forty-four years in education. Take this trip with me as you read about these many adventures. You will laugh and you will cry, but you will be inspired.

Home Is Where The Heart Is Even In A Chicken House

The Lord put on my heart to write Home Is Where the Heart Is Even in a Chicken House. It goes back to the day I was born and my childhood days growing up, days with my parents and living in a chicken house while my dad built a small three-room house for us to live in. Also, the book talks about me being bullied in school. I lived with my grandparents and my aunt on their farm in California for a while when I was a teenager. My aunt is one year and nine months older than me, and this also tells of the fun we had and the mischievous things that we did. This is telling the way things were growing up in my time, now called "the old-fashioned" days-houses, cars, games, and how kids made their own fun. I got married and had my own family, and time went on to be happy times. There were also heartaches that the Lord helped me through and healing, different places where the Lord intervened and spoke to me in many ways. I moved to Texas for eleven years and, later, on a ranch in South Dakota, then later, back to Ohio. I needed to support myself, and I started hauling Amish people, and I had different experiences with them. That was another fun time in my day. The best is yet to come! In the pages of this book, I think you will laugh, cry, and most of all, be blessed.

In 1932, at age four, Alice moved with her family of five in the dilapidated house on the hill, above the creek bed where hobos, weary of riding the rails looking for work, often camped. The front yard had not a blade of grass and was riddled with gopher holes like the top of a salt or pepper shaker. In the upcoming years, the United States teetered on whether to enter the war already begun in Europe. Alice chronicles the vicissitudes of The Great Depression and perilous war years, while she and her family coped with the challenges of living their ordinary lives. The author brings warmth and humor as she relates wildly off-beat and entertaining incidents that lift the spirit with the joys of living, no matter the clouds of history.
