It seems a long time since life was good for Liz Dewhurst. Her happy marriage to Gregor ended six months ago when she discovered he had been having an affair with another local woman for two years. But if that wasn't enough, Liz and Gregor's family businesses were also intertwined. Growing up on neighboring farms on the East coast of Fife, an area blessed with rich soil and beautiful, unspoiled landscapes, the marriage made it perfect sense to merge. The separation, however, has come at the worse possible time. With business bad, the two farms are barely struggling to survive on their own. Then an extraordinary opportunity arises. An American-financed consortium is looking to build a golf course, and with Liz's and Gregor's land think they have found the ideal site for the best new links course in Britain. Liz is torn: the money is tempting, and she knows that by turning the scheme down she will face the wrath of the local community. On the other hand, the farm has passed through five generations of her family; is she really ready to give up that history, a move that will also help Gregor and his mistress? At the same time Liz's son Alex, a student at nearby St Andrews University, suggests renting a room out to raise some money. And the person he suggests, his German tutor Arthur Kempler, is the man to change everything. Funny, charming, he hits it off immediately with both Liz and Alex's grandfather. Indeed, if he were twenty-five years younger, Liz would find him extremely attractive. Then Arthur goes on holiday to Spain, and asks Liz to join him. Once over there, she meets the last person either expected to see: Arthur's son . . . In Robin Pilcher, readers will discover a fresh new voice in fiction. With a deft touch and an uncanny sense of the human heart, Robin Pilcher, after a promising start with his first novel, is now a proven master of the genre.

It has been my desire that one day, I would publish my poems. The time has come. In a span of more than three decades, poetic sentiments have come to me sporadically. I have been able to capture them at those transient moments. They have reflected my genuine thoughts and feelings. These poems are from an engineer who has lived in two worlds, and about starting over. It is through reading them that I feel I am living my life once more. I hope that my readers will feel the same. Growing up in Shanghai before immigrating to the United States in 1989, I care to read and understand modern history of Shanghai and China from an American perspective. Some of the poems are a result of these readings and reminiscence of my old world. I hope they will give readers a glimpse of the world where the events are impacting us. Examples are poems of "Whole River Red: Childhood of the Bund," "Whole River Red: The Turbulence of the Century," and "Thinking of Your Tenderness: Xi'an Coup d'État in 1936." They are written in one of the Ci forms the ancient poem formats with various titles and structured long and short verses as well as unique tunes and tones within. Unfortunately, the Ci's unique musicals would be lost in English translation, along with its highly condensed classical idioms, metaphors, and poetic visuals associated with a pictorial language. I try to make it up with background notes when dealing with historical figures and events. When poems are written originally in English, they are restored in Chinese. It is my hope that the bilingual form of this book brings pleasure to readers in both worlds. Additionally, I have grouped together those poems created in the farewell mood and during travels so that my readers would have an engaging experience when crossing between the past and the present and the real and emotional realms.

Brazil has undergone transformative change since the 1980s, from an authoritarian regime to a democratic society advancing on all fronts—political, social, economic, and diplomatic. In Starting Over, Albert Fishlow traces the evolution of this member of the BRICS group over the last twenty-five years and looks toward the future as the newly elected president, Dilma Rousseff, follows her very popular predecessor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, or “Lula.” The transformation of the country began with the founding of the Nova República and the Constitution of 1988, which established a strong executive and encased key social principles such as a citizen’s right to education and health care. Then the Real Plan of 1994—initiated under President Fernando Henrique Cardoso—set the stage for economic growth and a stable economy. There were setbacks, especially in the mid-1990s with the Mexican devaluation, Asian financial crisis, Russian default, and Argentine collapse, and, later, the U.S. recession. But changed economic policies in the late 1990s put Brazil on the right path to future economic growth, which resumed during the Lula years. With popular participation in the electoral process at an all-time high, politics has been profoundly altered in Brazil. Economic rules are now more permanent, and economic advance more regular. A healthier and longer life is now available to a broader swath of the population, and there is opportunity for social advancement. In addition, its foreign policy has greater consequence internally as well as externally. Dilma’s two immediate predecessors—Cardoso and Lula—are tough acts to follow. Their influence has been profound, and Brazil is now a very different nation than it was in the 1980s. But she is working from their template to move the country forward. This insightful book clearly explains how and why the country has progressed to its current standing and what the future portends. Starting Over is essential reading for anyone trying to grasp what is happening in this dynamic nation.

Winner of 2013 Rea Award for short fiction “A rare and true master” (Richard Ford), the celebrated author of The Light in the Piazza returns with these spellbinding stories. Since her remarkable debut in 1948, Elizabeth Spencer has transfixed readers with her uncanny ability to portray how “twisted, chafing, inescapable, and life-supporting” (Alice Munro) the ties are that bind families and marriages. Here, with nine new stories, Spencer maps “the murky territory between our obligations and our desires” (David L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times), revealing the deep emotional fault lines and unseen fractures that lie just beneath the veneer of normal family life. Compared to Cheever and Hawthorne, Spencer affirms her stature as one of the outstanding living writers of the American South.
