Little Sister Death is the stunning 'lost' horror novel of the late William Gay. Inspired by the famous 19th Century Bell Witch haunting of Tennessee, it follows the unravelling life of David Binder, a writer who moves his young family to a haunted farmstead to try and find inspiration for his faltering work... Beautifully written and structured, Little Sister Death is a loving and faithful addition to the field of classic horror writing, eschewing any notions of irony or post-modern tricks as it aims, instead, straight for your soul.

Little Sister is the third novel in David Hewson's gripping Detective Pieter Vos series set in Amsterdam. Her death will haunt us forever. Now the price must be paid. Kim and Mia Timmers were just eleven years old when their family was killed. The sisters were accused of murdering the lead singer of a world-famous pop band in the Dutch fishing village of Volendam, believing him to be responsible for their family's deaths. The evidence seemed irrefutable at the time and the sisters were imprisoned in Marken, a local psychiatric institution. Now, ten years later, they are due for release. Pieter Vos, a detective with the Amsterdam police, is given cause to re-open the case when the girls disappear along with the nurse responsible for escorting them to a halfway house. When the nurse's corpse washes up on the beach at Marken, it becomes apparent that the institution holds the key to the investigation. And it seems that Vos's boss, De Groot, has something to hide which is relevant to the case. Then, the case takes an unexpected turn when it becomes clear that someone is posing as Little Jo - Kim and Mia's other sister - who was supposedly murdered along with their parents ten years ago . . .

On its 150th anniversary, four acclaimed authors offer personal reflections on their lifelong engagement with Louisa May Alcott's classic novel of girlhood and growing up. For the 150th anniversary of Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic, Kate Bolick, Jenny Zhang, Carmen Maria Machado, and Jane Smiley explore their strong lifelong personal engagement with Little Women--what it has meant to them and why it still matters. Each takes as her subject one of the four March sisters, reflecting on each particular sister's story and what it has to teach us. Bolick writes about how the depiction of Meg as the "ideal woman" reveals Alcott's dim views of marriage and planted seeds in Bolick's own young mind. Zhang, unlike many readers, considered Jo her least favorite sister as a girl, and writes about how Jo eventually won her heart. Machado brings her SF and horror sensibilities to a unique perspective on Beth, "dead & pure girl extraordinaire"; and Smiley, who considers Amy the most captivating sister, writes about Amy's evolution into the responsibilities of adulthood from the perspective of Smiley's own experience of motherhood. These four voices come together to form a deep, funny, far-ranging meditation on the power of great literature to shape our lives.

Traditional approaches have failed women lost in the maze of abuse and violence. Murphy, an award-winning rehabilitationist and advocate (and abuse survivor), strives to ensure that the real people are not lost in examining abuse issues. She challenges readers to examine their perceptions and stereotypes, while recommending a plan of action to radically alter how services are provided to survivors. Included are eleven first-person accounts of rape, incest, prostitution, verbal and emotional-as well as-physical abuse as told in the exact words of the survivors. Each story is followed by concrete recommendations and thoughts on assisting the individual in their return to work, their efforts within the rehabilitation, welfare, medical, and legal systems. Making the Connections contains different plans of action to radically alter how survivors can be helped by both the health care and rehabilitation communities. Murphy provides alternatives for bringing the survivor of physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse back into society through reestablishment of their work identity.

The volume is an attempt to read William Faulkner's <I>The Sound and the Fury while bearing in mind three phenomenological philosophies of death as proposed by Max Scheler, Martin Heidegger, and Emmanuel Levinas. The literary analysis mainly reveals how Benjy senses Scheler's intuitive certainty of death, and presents Jason as the Schelerian dweller of the West who uproots the thought of finitude out of his awareness. Despite the committed suicide, Quentin Compson represents the embodiment of Heidegger's Dasein, realizing both the authentic and inauthentic Being-towards-death. Lastly, Caddy's fecundity and Dilsey's responsibility for the Other exemplify what Levinas regards as victory over death, and demonstrate the infinity the French philosopher describes.
