Household solid waste management is a severe problem in East Africa capital cities. Domestic actors tend to be neglected in their role in solving the problem. This book develops a new conceptual framework for analyzing the role of households in solid waste management in East Africa's capital cities. This conceptual framework is derived from the theory of the Modernized Mixture Approach. By focusing on households in informal settlements in particular, domestic routines for handling wastes are analyzed for their technical and social dimensions. By elaborating upon the technical and social aspects of domestic solid wastes and the role of householders in producing and handling these wastes, this book adds to the scanty body of scientific knowledge of sustainable waste management by householders in East African countries. The knowledge generated with respect to technical and social dimensions can be used in the future by researchers and policy makers in SWM policies both in East Africa and comparable situations elsewhere in the world.

A waste refers to any material or product that has been considered useless by the owner and needs to be discarded or has been discarded. Solid waste is any organic or inorganic materials generated from various human activities which have been considered unwanted or useless therefore disposed treated or untreated. On the other hand, the term household’s solid waste management has been defined differently by different writers and Authors. For instance, defined it as all activities that seek to minimize the environmental, aesthetic and human health impacts of households solid waste. A much more comprehensive definition of has been provided by, which stated that solid waste management is a discipline associated with the control of generation, storage, collection , transfer and transporting, processing and disposal of it. So, it is a manner in accordance to the best principle of public health, economics, engineering, conservation, aesthetics, and other environmental conservations responsive to public health. Inherent in this definition, solid waste management is a processes which includes waste generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and disposal of wastes in accordance to the principles of household’s solid waste management. The rapid urbanization and growth of urban population that has been taking place during the 20th century virtually transformed the world in to communities of cities and towns. These developments imposing challenges on environment in which most of them have to be addressed at international level. Among those environmental challenges, municipal waste management is a critical one. This is because as long as humans have been living in settled communities, solid waste generation has been an unavoidable in both developed and developing nations.
The aim of this book was to address the household solid waste generation, recycling, and alternative treatments in the city of the Mekong Delta region in southern Vietnam. Two-stage survey of 100 households was conducted for dry season and rainy season. Household solid waste was collected from each household and classified into 10 physical categories and 83 subcategories. The book's contents presented the following issues: (i) to evaluate the quantity and composition of household solid waste to identify opportunities for waste recycling in detailed composition; (ii) to analyze the influence of relevant factors for household solid waste generation rates by physical categories and subcategories, next to develop the mathematical models of correlations between the waste generation rates of main physical categories and relevant factors; (iii) to examine the habit of households on recyclable waste discharge, the household attitudes toward good waste management and the household behaviors toward recycling activities; and (iv) to investigate the contribution of household solid waste treatment alternatives to mitigate greenhouse gas emission under various possible analysis scenarios.

This volume provides a perspective on how different countries cope with the municipal solid waste problem politically, administratively, and technically--with a particular focus on sanitary landfilling. Fifteen countries report on the quantities of such waste generated, its composition, and on various management methods used. In addition they report on sanitary landfilling, the impacts of past practices, current practices for leachate control, and landfill gas management. Finally, the role of government, new handling strategies, and likely future directions in waste management are discussed.
This thesis aims to address several key policy issues relating to the common solid waste management problems in developing countries, using Ho-Chi-Minh City in as Vietnam as a case study. Specifically, this thesis has four objectives: (1) to estimate the households willingness to pay for changes in the salient attributes of solid waste services and investigate the location/distance effects on their preferences; (2) to estimate the household demand function for solid waste services and investigate the reliability of the household contingent behaviour data; (3) to examine the welfare impact of the pay-by-bag scheme, the most practicable form of unit pricing in the city’s current context; and (4) to investigate how to finance the city's current solid waste management system in a cost-effective manner, and determine the optimal direct waste fee if the fee-based financing scheme is shown to be economically preferable.

The management of urban waste constitutes one of the major environmental challenges facing African cities in general and Cameroon in particular. Unprecedented population growth and changes in consumption patterns and lifestyles have led to increased waste generation. Municipal solid waste management efforts lag behind the rate of waste generation with attendant environmental and public health risks. The activities, the gender dynamics and politics at the pools of waste generation, particularly the households and markets largely influence the outcome of waste management strategies and policies. This book brings out the gender dimension of municipal solid waste generation and management in the City of Bamenda. It is hoped that the findings revealed and proposals made from the study will be employed by municipal authorities in Cameroon and beyond to enhance waste management efforts.
