Archaeological discoveries in Jerusalem capture worldwide attention in various media outlets. The continuing quest to discover the city’s physical remains is not simply an attempt to define Israel’s past or determine its historical legacy. In the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is also an attempt to legitimate—or undercut—national claims to sovereignty. Bridging the ever-widening gap between popular coverage and specialized literature, Finding Jerusalem provides a comprehensive tour of the politics of archaeology in the city. Through a wide-ranging discussion of the material evidence, Katharina Galor illuminates the complex legal contexts and ethical precepts that underlie archaeological activity and the discourse of "cultural heritage" in Jerusalem. This book addresses the pressing need to disentangle historical documentation from the religious aspirations, social ambitions, and political commitments that shape its interpretation.

Finding Jerusalem is an unspoken quest that lives in the hearts and minds of all people. A quest to unlock the great promise of being a part of the next great evolution of humanity. All citizens of humanity have within them a propensity to improve. And now more than ever the world needs a collective vision and life-affirming values to enable the building of nations that recognize the self-evident opportunities to collectively elevate humanity.Elevating humanity will come from the example of our culture, our art, our ingenuity and our compassion. It will come from the bravery of stepping back and asking what a successful society really looks like, and then facing the hard decisions that are now needed to rebuild society with a fresh vision. It will come from nations working together to adopt humanity-improving ideas. And it will come from the invisible bonds between all people. But these invisible bonds that once bound societies have become frayed. Nations such as Great Britain and the United States are trapped in a reversion to the perceived safety of incrementalism, seemingly petrified to master a new age of enlightenment that could make many self-evident 'human truths' a reality. It is a hesitance that risks sacrificing the future of humanity to the potentially malevolent systems on offer from elsewhere in the world. In Finding Jerusalem: A manifesto for elevating humanity, MJ Macfarlane takes readers on a journey through the countries that are pioneering new futures without any hesitance, and draws from his own background growing up in impoverished circumstances in the post-industrial heartlands of Britain to ask: Where have we come from? Where are we going? And which nation will lead the next great elevation of humanity?

Throughout the twentieth century, most British men and women would know inside their hearts that they were playing their part in building a 'Jerusalem' within "England's green and pleasant land". The British were world-famous for their impeccable manners and sense of fair play. But as the twenty-first century progresses toward the end of its second decade, something has gone wrong. The shared goal of building 'Jerusalem' has started to feel forgotten, and the invisible bonds that once bound Britons have become frayed. Rather than dwell on the causes or remedies, MJ Macfarlane sets off on a world tour to discover whether the underlying mission of countries like Great Britain and the USA are losing ground to alternative visions for the future, and whether the potential demise of Britain's 'Jerusalem' should be a worry for all free-and-liberal nations.MJ Macfarlane contemplates what other countries are getting right and what Britain is getting wrong, by making observations on the triumphs and absurdities of a range of other prominent nations including the UAE, China, Russia, Singapore, Japan - and also the de facto 'technology nation' that is the West Coast of the USA. Heavily influenced by his impoverished working-class background and decades of travel that started when his family took a freezer bag full of food on their first ever holiday "abroad", MJ Macfarlane makes observations set against his own unique experiences whilst overcoming the obstacles of global travel that include conforming to the rules for climbing a mountain in China, being arrested as a British spy in Russia, and being unable to get excited by ancient rock drawings in China after seeing erotic rock paintings in Sri Lanka. Finding Jerusalem contrasts historical anecdotes and personal stories with first-hand experiences and researched facts to decide if Britain, the United States and other nations of the 'Anglo-sphere' are losing their crowns as self-proclaimed 'heavens on earth' and which countries, if any, might take their place as a 'new Jerusalem'?MJ Macfarlane finally concludes that as the twentieth century continues, the countries of the 'Anglo-sphere' must come together to build a great 'empire of the mind' to prevent the baton of global leadership being ceded to more sinister forces; and proposes a manifesto of ten changes that will help to restore the leadership status of Anglo-Saxon nations whilst also improving the human experience.

The title "New Jerusalem' is mentioned twenty times in the LDS scriptures, but only twice in the entire Bible, both of these are in the book of Revelation. In it John refers to the "city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name." (Rev. 3:12) In a later chapter, John actually saw that future event when the holy city was coming down from heaven, "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." (Rev. 21:2) The other eighteen references are in the latter-day scriptures. For instance, in the book of Ether, translated by Moroni, he tells us about this land of America: "And that it was the place of the New Jerusalem, which should come down out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord." (Ether 13:3) But there is another New Jerusalem as given in the tenth Article of Faith, "that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent." The New Jerusalem, then is two places or two cities, one built in heaven and another built on the American Continent. We read about these two cities coming together in the book of Doctrine & Covenants where we have the words given for the Saints to sing a "new song" The Lord hath brought down Zion from above. The Lord hath brought up Zion from beneath. (D&C 84:100) This book is about the Saints changing their hearts to live the Celestial law and gathering from all parts of the world to Independence, Missouri. It is to that city that the prophet will then move the Church headquarters and begin building the city of Zion and the New Jerusalem.

Stranger In A Strange Land

Gershom Scholem, the great humanist thinker and founder of modern Kabbalah, is all but forgotten today. But here, in a biography as daring and inquisitive as its subject, George Prochnik goes in search of Scholem, restoring the reputation of a vital intellectual and finding in his work a vision with the power to reinvigorate contemporary religious and political thought. Tracing Scholem's life from his upbringing in Berlin, where he experienced a close and transformative friendship with Walter Benjamin, Prochnik reveals how Scholem's frustration with the bourgeois ideology of Germany during WWI led him to discover mystic Judaism, Kabbalah, and, finally, Zionism. But having emigrated to what was to become Israel, Scholem again found himself a 'stranger in a strange land', ill at ease with a prevailing conservative form of Zionism. Prochnik follows Scholem to the modern Holy Land - only to find that he too is disillusioned by the state politics he encounters. But through his profound study of Scholem and his own experience of Jerusalem, Prochnik not only questions the ideological and religious constructs of Jerusalem, but finds an ethical way forward, showing how a new form of pluralism might energize Jewish thought.

The title "New Jerusalem" is mentioned twenty times in the LDS scriptures, but only twice in the entire Bible, both of these are in the book of Revelation. The Lord is giving the apostle John specific instructions for the branch of "the church in Sardis," which is in modern western Turkey, telling them they will be blessed if they overcome the things of this world. Then they will be a part of the "...city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name." (Rev. 3:12)In a later chapter, we will see that John actually saw that future event when the holy city was coming down from heaven, "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." (Rev. 21:2)The other eighteen references are in the latter-day scriptures. For instance, in Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi, the Lord has just finished instituting the sacrament and then he tells the Nephites, "And behold, this people will I establish in this land, unto the fulfilling of the covenant which I made with your father Jacob; and it shall be a New Jerusalem. And the powers of heaven shall be in the midst of this people; yea, even I will be in the midst of you. (3 Nephi 20:22) In the book of Ether, translated by Moroni, he tells us about this land of America: "And that it was the place of the New Jerusalem, which should come down out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord." (Ether 13:3)

"In an ancient cave in the mountains of Israel animal skins, centuries old, with strange markings on its dusty and dirty surface, were found by a mountain hiker who gathered the skins and took them to his home. Authoritative sources believe that if the ancient markings on the skins can be deciphered it could change history and solve the bitter dispute between Israelis and Muslims of the occupation of Jerusalem. The struggle for the ownership of the finding results in conflicts that claims lives and threaten those who have possession of the treasure. The Finding is a story of intrigue, love of country and the passionate lives of the people who the finding brings together. It is an adventure that by-passes the usual novel of pages of descriptive scenery, dcor and fashion. It travels at a fast literary pace through its sixty chapters and climaxes in an ending that brings the finding to life."

Learn tools and techniques you can use in any Biblical study and then explore the History of Israel. Use what you learn to analyze Old Testament prophecies and apocalyptic writings - all in preparation for comparing accounts of what Jesus told His disciples on the Mount of Olives and for analyzing the Revelation given to John. Round out your experience with in-depth studies of end-times players such as the Antichrist and the 144,000 'redeemed from the earth'. Finally, explore in great detail the major rapture positions and challenges presented by each.Ron Braley's book, Finding the End of the World, is a great resource for any serious student of God's Word. However, it will frustrate those who look to it for easy answers to questions surrounding the books of Daniel and Revelation, events of the End Times, and eschatological controversies. Instead, the author gives the reader and student the tools to delve into the Scriptures and discover the answers. Caution: This may lead the reader to question and even jettison some previously held views of the End of Times. While offering historical and theological background materials to consider, I believe the greatest value of this book is the study tools, guides and exercises it offers each student. The result is creating students of the Bible who know how to read and study for themselves. Ron Almberg, Jr. (B.A., Th.B., M.Div.).Ron Braley lives in Texas with Joanne, his wife of 27 years. They have 4 grown children and 2 grandchildren. Passion for spreading the Gospel and helping others to build their faith has led to the development of this comprehensive guide and the creation of Finding Discipleship, Inc.
