Uterine Fibroids are medical benign tumors (non-cancerous) of the smooth muscles of the uterine cavity. They are the most frequent tumor found in women (25%) especially after the age of 35.Uterine fibroids are tumors that grow in a woman's womb (uterus). These growths are normally not cancerous (benign).Fibroids are normally relatively avascular and may degenerate forming cysts and becoming calcified. They are believed to be caused by:1. Hormones in the body2. Genes (may run in families)50% of all women have fibroids by age 50.Frequent symptoms are:1. Heavy menstrual flow sometimes with blood clots2. Irregular menstrual periods3. Painful menses4. Backache5. Pain with exercise6. Painful and frequent urinationPelvic examination may show enlarged uterine swellingsUltrasound scans showed presence of fibroidsHysteroscopy uses a long, thin tube placed through the vagina and into the womb to examine the inside of the uterus1. If small no treatment is required.2. If larger, then treatment depends on the size, extent of the lesions, age of the patient and the desire for pregnancy.3. Birth control pills to help control heavy periods4. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) that secrete hormones to decrease the heavy bleeding and pain5. Correction of anemiaSurgery is needed if larger:Myomectomy. (removal of the fibroid and part of the lining of the uterine wall)This surgery excises the benign fibroid tumors from the uterus. The procedure is a good choice if the patient wants to have children. It will not prevent fibroids from growing again.Hysterectomy (removal of the whole uterus or womb)This surgery removes the uterus completely. It may be an option if the patient does not want children, medicines do not work, or the patient cannot have any other procedures.TABLE OF CONTENTIntroductionChapter 1 Uterine FibroidChapter 2 CausesChapter 3 SymptomsChapter 4 DiagnosisChapter 5 TreatmentChapter 6 PrognosisChapter 7 Uterine PolypChapter 8 Uterine CancerEpilogueAll women have fibroids some small some bigger. In fact fibroid is very common especially before menopause. The fibroid is believed to be thickened muscle tissue in the uterus or womb. Most of the patients with fibroid do not show any symptoms but those with complications may have severe bleeding or pain.Always send the patient with heavy menstrual bleeding for a comprehensive gynecological examination.

Fibroid tumors are so common that as many as three out of four women will develop them, although not all will require treatment. The location of the tumor will influence the type of symptoms you will experience. A sub-mucosal fibroid tumor is located in the inner cavity of the uterus. These tumors are thought to be responsible for heavy bleeding during periods. Sometimes the bleeding can become so heavy that a woman will become anemic. These tumors are benign and almost never grow or change into cancer. The symptoms, for those women who do experience them, can be debilitating and life altering. Women who experience symptoms from uterine fibroids may suffer from heavy bleeding, decreased bladder capacity, anemia and back pain or pelvic heaviness. Treatment options include both those which are surgical and those which are less invasive. At this time the only curative treatment for fibroids is a hysterectomy, because even if the fibroids are removed from the uterus to maintain fertility, these women have a higher incidence of recurrence several years later. Fortunately, many women under the age of 45 are able to keep their ovaries, which prevents the immediate effect of menopause.

Fibroids Menstruation Childbirth And Evolution

In the ancestral environment, a human female typically carried at least half a dozen babies to term. The fact that modern women are able to limit the number of children they bear has dramatic consequences for the incidence of uterine fibroids, as well as the clinical care of fibroids patients. "Fibroids, Menstruation, Childbirth, and Evolution" explores these connections, integrating a vast amount of medical knowledge about the uterus into one volume. During pregnancy, the mother's blood prepares for an enormous hemostatic event: the delivery of the placenta. That fetal organ is the vascular link between mother and offspring. At childbirth, one-tenth of mother's cardiac output flows through the placenta, feeding the growing child. When the placenta is sheared away from its attachment to the uterus, two hundred large uteroplacental arteries are ripped apart and bleed profusely into the uterine cavity. For many hours following delivery, uterine contractions slow blood flow within the uterus, allowing the high concentration of clotting factors built up in the mother's blood during pregnancy to solidify throughout the uterine circulation and stop blood loss. Then, hours later, the tide reverses, most of these uterine blood clots dissolve, and more normal blood flow returns to the uterus. This amazing process occurs with each pregnancy. During this process, the uterus is ischemic and hypoxic. Unlike brain and heart, which can only survive minutes of decreased blood flow, the uterus can withstand dramatically diminished blood flow for hours. In fact, it is natural for this to occur once every few years. Uterine ischemia and hypoxia are a natural part of every woman's genetic makeup. In 1995 a group of French physicians discovered that it was possible to emulate the physiology of childbirth by stopping blood flow to the uterus with small plastic particles. Initially, they injected these particles to diminish blood loss during subsequent fibroid surgery. However, they soon learned that the injection of these particles was therapeutic in and of itself for women with symptomatic fibroids. Unbeknownst to this French group, earlier, in 1964, an American physician surgically occluded the uterine arteries to treat women without fibroids who had excessive monthly menstrual blood loss. Subsequent physicians have occluded the uterine arteries in various ways to treat a third common disorder, adenomyosis. Finally, these clinical successes suggest that future episodes of endometriosis may be preventable in some women treated with uterine artery closure. Dr. Fred Burbank's comprehensive book provides insight into how physicians can use uterine artery closure techniques to more effectively treat uterine disorders. In addition, his book contains short courses on magnetic resonance imaging, hemodynamics, uterine artery embolization, and the hemostatic and hemolytic systems, making it possible for readers less familiar with these complex subjects to understand the text without referring to outside sources. About the Author Dr. Burbank is an epidemiologist, a psychiatrist, a diagnostic radiologist, a cardiovascular interventionalist, and an expert in women's health. He is also an inventor-entrepreneur. For recreation, he flies, swims, and reads. For more information, please visit his bio on www.saltcreekmedical.com.

Fibroids, despite their name, are not very fibrous at all. Instead, they consist of growths of smooth connective tissues and muscle that frequently show up on the uterus walls. Although it can be alarming to be told you have any type of growth, fibroid are usually harmless and noncancerous, so they are not a huge concern.Fibroids are also very common, affecting over 50 percent of females overall. Excerpt from Fibroid Tumors of the Uterus Death by hemorrhage is very rare. I have knowl edge of only three instances. Many women are blanched, and anemic, and feeble, but they live, and most of them are relieved by curetting, or at times by electrolysis d [a Apostoli, or by the removal of a pedunculated fibroid from the interior of the uterus, or by enucleating a half-extruded one. The feeling of weight and inconvenience caused by these tumors is sufficient in some cases to call for their removal, and the sufferer has a right to demand operation, even if life is not threatened, for surgery is not only to save life, but to contribute to its comfort; and there is no class of cases in which the decision of the patient has more weight than in these cases of fibroid tumors. I do not want to carry this thing any longer; it annoys me. I can not stoop to button my boots, andi want it re moved, said a woman to me. I had put her off several months, and she had abundant time to think the matter over. I thought she had a right to decide the question of operation. I removed the tumor, and she got well.
