Colin Anson was born Claus Ascher in Berlin and raised a Protestant. He was forced to flee Nazi Germany because his father, Curt Ascher, was one of Hitler's few serious political opponents during the 1930s. Curt stood up for his beliefs, was arrested by the Gestapo, imprisoned at Dachau and murdered there in 1937.In 1939, with his own life in danger, Colin found refuge in Britain, where he went on to join the British Army. Selected for Commando service, he trained with 3 Troop, the only German-speaking unit in the British armed forces. He was attached to the Royal Marines and took part in the invasion of Italy and Sicily in 1943, surviving a near-fatal head wound, before participating in raids in Yugoslavia and Albania, and then in the liberation of Corfu. At the end of the war, he was to find out who had betrayed his father, and the book includes an account of how he reacted to this discovery. Not only is German Schoolboy, British Commando a thrilling account of his valiant service in the Second World War, its description of Colin's childhood as the son of one of Hitler's most outspoken opponents provides a unique insight into the political maelstrom of 1930s Germany. It is an extraordinary portrait of a son's bravery and determination, continuing his father's legacy as he fought to defeat the Nazis.

Battlefield Afghanistan

Author : Mike Ryan
ISBN : STANFORD:36105123284502
Genre : History
File Size : 59.96 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle
Download : 606
Read : 387

From interviews with his numerous contacts among the coalition forces stationed in Afghanistan, Mike Ryan has done what journalists have so far been unable to do. Battlefield Afghanistan is the first thorough-going account of the war in the former Taliban state: not the politics behind the conflict, but the actual situation for the men on the ground. Far from simply 'keeping the peace,' coalition forces in Afghanistan are currently involved in full-scale warfare with both al-Qaeda militants and the forces of the resurgent Taliban. Battlefield Afghanistan tells the real, inside story of the men under fire, based upon first-hand evidence from members of 3 Para, 16 Air Assault Brigade, the Royal Marines and the Special Forces community, together with the views and experiences of the US and French troops. As their accounts indicate, the hostilities faced have proved to be far greater than was anticipated, and the situation in Afghanistan far more serious than the politicians would like the public to realise.

Royal Marines take charge of their minds. Once you can take charge of your mind you can unlock your potential. The Royal Marines is one of the most-respected ‘brands’ in our Armed Forces. As an elite force, held at peak readiness for worldwide rapid response to neutralise enemy threats, they are the UK’s Commando Force and the Royal Navy’s amphibious troops. Deployed globally, often without host nation permission, they are projected from the sea to conduct special operations on land. This compact illustrated handbook is based on the Royal Marines’ 14-week training period of lessons that determines whether a new recruit is fit to become a Royal Marine Commando. Looking at the key stages of this training, Think Like A Marine shows how we can adapt the Royal Marine development programme to our everyday lives and learn how to anticipate situations in order to achieve the best possible outcomes. Includes advice on how to become fit in mind and body, as well as some invaluable survival techniques that will influence and change your life for the better. Roll your socks so they ‘smile’, think like an ‘ice man’, get kit-muster ready for a modern survival trip, sharpen your instincts and think critically are just a few of the subjects covered in this fascinating book.
