Writing With Power

Author : Peter Elbow
ISBN : 9780198028192
Genre : Language Arts & Disciplines
File Size : 90.95 MB
Format : PDF, Mobi
Download : 863

A classic handbook for anyone who needs to write, Writing With Power speaks to everyone who has wrestled with words while seeking to gain power with them. Here, Peter Elbow emphasizes that the essential activities underlying good writing and the essential exercises promoting it are really not difficult at all. Employing a cookbook approach, Elbow provides the reader (and writer) with various recipes: for getting words down on paper, for revising, for dealing with an audience, for getting feedback on a piece of writing, and still other recipes for approaching the mystery of power in writing. In a new introduction, he offers his reflections on the original edition, discusses the responses from people who have followed his techniques, how his methods may differ from other processes, and how his original topics are still pertinent to today's writer. By taking risks and embracing mistakes, Elbow hopes the writer may somehow find a hold on the creative process and be able to heighten two mentalities--the production of writing and the revision of it. From students and teachers to novelists and poets, Writing with Power reminds us that we can celebrate the uses of mystery, chaos, nonplanning, and magic, while achieving analysis, conscious control, explicitness, and care in whatever it is we set down on paper.

The IT Book is from my heart and much of it is from my life. I think if there is any one thing that children of all ages need it is encouragement. With this in mind I have written The IT Book Short Stories of Encouragement for Children of All Ages. I called it The IT Book because the stories are titled LISTEN TO IT, LOVE IT, EXPLORE IT, OVERCOME IT and so forth. I never realized what an interesting life I have had until I wrote this book. I have always enjoyed words, languages and writing. Humor is a strong point in our family and I am happy to see my sense of humor coming out in some of these stories. Like our parents, I have always had a great appreciation for beauty in any form: in music, in words that uplift, in nature, and in the kindness in people which manifests in so many ways. My husband, Bill Mercer, wrote several of these stories. I think you will find them delightful. It is my hope and prayer that this little book will uplift you in some way.

The Young Musician S Survival Guide

Author : Amy Nathan
ISBN : 9780199710195
Genre : Music
File Size : 37.18 MB
Format : PDF
Download : 810
Read : 986

Learning to play an instrument can be fun and, at times, frustrating. This lively, accessible book helps young people cope with the difficulties involved in learning a new instrument and remaining dedicated to playing and practicing. Teens from renowned music programs - including the Juilliard School's Pre-College Program and Boston University's Tanglewood Institute - join pro musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Paula Robison, and James Galway in offering practical answers to questions from what instrument to play to where the musical road may lead. In this revised and expanded edition, Amy Nathan has updated the book to address today's more technologically-minded young musician. Expanded sections cover the various ways students can use technology to assist in mastering an instrument and in making practice time more productive, from using the Internet to download pieces to be learned and playing along with downloaded tunes to practicing with computer-based practice programs, CDs, and videos/DVDs of musical performances. She also addresses concerns of young composers and conductors, two groups not mentioned in the original edition. The book's updated Resource Guide suggests where to get additional help, both online and off.
