Hocak Teaching Materials Volume 1

Author : Johannes Helmbrecht
ISBN : 9781438433400
File Size : 25.94 MB
Format : PDF, Docs

Comprehensive bilingual dictionary of the Hocąk language. The most comprehensive dictionary of the Hocąk language (formerly known as Winnebago) to date, this bidirectional Hocąk-English/English-Hocąk dictionary contains approximately 4,000 entries. Hocąk is a highly endangered North American Indian language spoken by less than two hundred people in different parts of Wisconsin and Nebraska. This dictionary and volume 2 of the Hocąk Teaching Materials are the outcome of a large project on the documentation of the Hocąk language, which was carried out in close cooperation with the Hocąk Language Division, a tribal institution for the stabilization and revitalization of the Hocąk language in Mauston, Wisconsin. The volume contains a lengthy introduction to the basics of the phonology, orthography, and morphology of the Hocąk language, written in a learner-friendly, easy-to-access style, explaining linguistic terms so that it can be used by nonlinguists. The individual lexical entries of the words are organized according to the standards of modern lexicography, containing all necessary phonetic, grammatical, and semantic information for the use of the Hocąk words. In addition, every word is provided with about three Hocąk example sentences in order to demonstrate the typical use of the words in different contexts. Also of interest are a frequency list of all words in the dictionary counted on the basis of a large corpus of Hocąk texts, and a thesaurus of all Hocąk words in the dictionary. A valuable source of information on the Hocąk language and culture, this work will appeal to linguists in general, and specialists in Native American languages, as well as anthropologists and all learners of the Hocąk language. “Collaboration between the Ho-Chunk Nation and University of Erfurt linguists yielded this and a second volume intended to teach the nation’s language. The need is urgent: a people of 6,500 contains but 200 native speakers … This is an important acquisition for reference collections supporting Native American studies and linguistics study.” ― CHOICE

My name is Gracie Springs, and I am not a witch… but I’m pretty sure my cat is. I first started to get suspicious when he jumped just a little too high while chasing after a robin in our front yard. I knew for sure when he opened up his mouth and addressed me by name! The first thing he told me? That he doesn’t like the name I gave him—even though “Fluffy” fits him like a warm sweater at Christmas. Now we’ve compromised on “Merlin the Magical Fluff,” which according to him references his long and proud lineage just fine. After that small matter was settled, he informed me that I must uphold his secret or risk spending the rest of my life in some magical prison. I agreed, not knowing it would turn into a full-time job of covering his tracks and fibbing our way out of some pretty tight spots. When my boss at the local coffee shop turns up dead as a dormouse, things go from challenging to practically impossible… especially since all my coworkers seem to think I’m to blame. Here’s hoping my witchy cat can charm our way out of this one, because right now it looks like I’m cursed if I do and charged with murder if I don’t. Yikes!

When Mr. Fluff, a rascally orange tabby, moves from the suburbs to the big city, he isn’t sure he likes his new home. In this timeless new series, evocative of vintage-styled 1960’s illustrated early reader books, an adventurous cat explores city living. Lying on his belly soaking up the warm sun and listening to the birds outside, Mr. Fluff had the perfect life, or so he thought. When the orange tabby goes for a car ride one day with his human family, he ends up in a building that reaches the sky, a place the humans call their new home. So begins the escapades of Mr. Fluff the cat in this classically styled early reader, Mr. Fluff and the Tall Tower, the debut title in The Adventures of Mr. Fluff early reader series by David Brandt. Mr. Fluff isn’t sure he likes apartment living—he is an outdoor cat, after all. He needs some convincing. When he sneaks out into the hallway of his new apartment and meets a sweet neighbor who shares a strange and delicious treat, Mr. Fluff decides maybe city living isn’t so bad. “Why, hello!” said a grey-haired woman as she looked down at Mr. Fluff with a smile. “Where on earth did you come from?” She took one of the slices of pastrami out of the small bag. Then she took a knife and chopped it up into tiny pieces and put it on a pretty plate. She put the plate down on the ground. Mr. Fluff loved the delicious meat with a salty, spicy flavor. He decided that pastrami was his new favorite food. Author David Brandt expertly weaves an early reader in a vintage fashion reminiscent of Frog and Toad and illustrated in a charming retro style by Olga Lavrova with soft painterly images evocative of the timeless art of Emil Weiss. Perfect for the youngest readers, Brandt’s stories use a nostalgic language style, pointedly incorporating sight words which are reiterated in a glossary at the book’s end, to bring a whimsical and fun tale featuring his gallant and venturous character, Mr. Fluff.
